Richard
"Rick" O'Connell was orphaned at an early age, bouncing from orphanage
to orphanage until the age of six when he ran away to seek his own future and
not that of the nuns' choosing. He began learning the ways of the street and how
to survive by thieving. It was when he tried to pick the wrong pocket of a woman
in the Philippines that he met Helga Sinclair. (Afterward, very battered and
bruised, but he put up a good fight for a seven-year-old.) Sinclair admired the
boy's audacity, and needing a diversion from personal affairs, took the boy
